Please In detail, can someone better describe what Java-based games are/need?

Ok im into programing for games. I have basic knowledge with C# (i took one collage corse with it) as well as some other languages such as VB and javascript. (but javascript is more for web design) Programing for web based games has always been my goal, and I’ve taken a lot of consideration about learning to program with Java. Runescape is one of my all time favorate games, and it is Java-based. My question is, can someone more specifically describe what java based means? Obvously in short it is based off of the Java language. But does it incluce more than just the Java language alone? Are there more langauges based off of Java that are used? Im guessing it takes more than just Java to write a game as big as Runescape, so does Java-based mean Java is the primary language or what? Just a little clarity on that would be appreciated.
