You need to find a place with a lot of coal rocks, like that area northwest of Lumbridge, or the “Coal Trucks” mini-game. Coal is honestly the best way to go, because you can get a lot of cash along with levels. Gold is also another option for cash + exp, but compared to coal isn’t really worth it.

Iron is a perfectly sufficient alternative because you can mine it quick, and you’ll probably end up getting more exp than coal. With iron you generally just want to drop it immediately after you get it. Before the “Grand Exchange” ruined runescape, you could have underlings take your unwanted iron from you for free so you didn’t have to waste time dropping each piece.

Quick Sum-up:
* Coal or Gold = might take longer, but you can get a lot of cash in exchange.
* Iron = You’ll level up quicker, but it will be more repetitive, and you’ll yeild no cash.

In my final word, if you plan on mining mithril at level 55, I’d suggest you don’t. Mine coal or iron until you’re level 60, THEN mine mithril at the Mining Guild, which is a miner’s dream. If you start trying to get mithril at 55, it takes a very long time to actually get the ore out of the rock, and it’s just a waste of time.
