what is the purpose of a skull in Runescape?

when you put your cursor over it it says that it is a skull not a skull sceptre or anything.

It is to show others that either you have died, or on a PVP world you automatically start with a skull. If you dont have a skull and die, you will keep your 3 most valuable items ( if you go onto the equipment tab, there is a skull which you can check which items you keep ) if you have a skull and die, then you lose everything unless you have the protect item on which will protect your most valuable item in coins.
